2023 Presidency: South Easterners Cannot Be Trusted With Power –Osun Monarch

Ahead of the 2023 general election, one of the traditional rulers in Osun State, Oba Abdulrasheed Olawale Akanbi Telu II, has said that southeasterners cannot be trusted to be Nigeria President.

The monarch made the remark in a statement issued by his media aide, Alli Ibraheem, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday.

The monarch’s remark came at a time when politicians and stakeholders in the Southeast are clamouring that the area should be allowed to produce the next President after Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 on the basis of equity.

Oba Akanbi stated that the warning became imperative because the sit-at-home order issued by the members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) was not only inimical to their survival but also to the growth of the nation.

While advocating a rethink by the people in the area on their approach to the nation’s growth, the monarch noted that allowing the Nigerian President of Igbo extraction was costly.

According to him, “No Nigerian will feel secure in the hands of a leader whose ethnic attachment deprived other Nigerians of their rights.”

He also added that the failure of the south easterners to change their approach would amount to chasing shadows on their political journey of producing Nigeria’s President.

While acknowledging the damage done to by the civil war, he enjoined the south easterners to change their attitude of barring people from other parts of the country from owning property in their domain.

He insisted that the policy was not only detrimental to their political strength, but also a deficit to the economic unity of Nigeria. He stressed that, “The civil war wounds meted on south westerners is a weak factor to institutionalize policies capable of tearing the nation apart.

“I have people from across Nigeria in Iwo, including the south easterners.

They not only have their businesses but also built their houses and own farmlands.

Such is not only peculiar to Iwo but to other parts of the country, except the Southeast.

A Nigerian in Nigeria should be able to own land anywhere.

“The style by the south easterners is barbaric. Such is not only detrimental to their economic viability but also to their political recognition.

As a traditional ruler, I can’t trust any south easterner as my President.”
