17-yr-old boy dies in Ogun while swimming

A family in Ogun State has been plunged into grief following the drowning of its 17-year-old son (name withheld) while swimming.

Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, made this known in an interactive session with the press, urging members of the public to exercise extreme caution when swimming in rivers, streams and swimming pools.

According to him, “hotel and recreational facility operators must ensure that all swimming pools are properly supervised, clearly marked, and have trained lifeguards on duty at all times.”

He called for enhanced safety measures at recreational centres and swimming facilities across the state following the death of the boy who drowned while swimming.

According to Oluseyi, the warning came as a result of recurring incidents of drowning in the state, noting that the teenager lost his life in a recent swimming-related incident.

The loss of the boy “is a heart-breaking incident, which is a stark reminder that swimming without an on-duty lifeguard or capable hands around is a deadly risk. One careless moment can cost a lifetime. Please, be careful out there,” he warned.” However, Oluseyi did not provide further details on where or when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile the Ogun State Police Command has welcomed newly commissioned officers from Regular Course 7, who were recently posted following their passing out parade and presidential commissioning into the Nigeria Police Force. The officers had completed their five-year training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

Upon arrival, the officers were formally welcomed, and enrolled in an orientation programme to familiarise them with the Command’s operations, structure and policing expectations.    The programme which was handled by the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, and the management team of the command, focused on leadership, discipline, professionalism, ethical conduct, operational readiness and community policing. The participants were admonished to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and integrity.
