Federal Government College (FGC), Warri, has announced plans to establish a Technology and Innovation Centre as part of activities marking its Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years of academic excellence, unity and leadership development.
The plan was unveiled in Abuja by the Global President of the Federal Government College Warri Old Students Association (FEGOCOWOSA), Dr Godwin Amobi Alo, during a media briefing ahead of the anniversary celebrations.
Dr Alo said the Technology and Innovation Centre is aimed at preparing students for the 21st-century global economy through practical exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, including robotics, artificial intelligence, computer programming, and virtual and augmented reality.
According to him, the centre will also support the Federal Government’s transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by enabling students to register for and sit examinations within the school environment, in line with Nigeria’s digital education policy.
“This Technology and Innovation Centre is essential, not optional. It will ensure that our students are equipped with the skills required to thrive in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while fostering innovation, creativity and critical thinking,” Dr Alo said.
He further disclosed that the school’s ₦3 billion Legacy Fund would also finance the construction of a World-Class Sports Complex to enhance students’ physical and mental wellbeing, as well as a Post-College Scholarship Endowment to support outstanding graduates seeking tertiary education or technical and vocational training.
Dr Alo announced that the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will be held in three phases across Lagos, Abuja and Warri, to allow for broad participation by alumni and stakeholders.
Phase One is scheduled for January 31, 2026, in Lagos, featuring an Anniversary Ball and Fund-Raising Dinner.
Phase Two will take place in Abuja on February 5, 2026, with keynote addresses, panel discussions, advocacy for educational reform, and the FEGOCOWOSA Annual General Congress.
Phase Three, the Grand Finale, will be held in Warri from February 12 to 15, 2026, and will include a grand road carnival, commissioning of developmental projects, school inspection, a special assembly with old students, student luncheon, and an Awards Night on February 14.
Calling for support from alumni, partners and the general public, Dr Alo stressed that strategic investment in education and skills development remains critical to national competitiveness and sustainable human capital development.
“FGC Warri has continued to shape leaders and innovators. At 60, the college is reinforcing its position as a STEM-ready institution contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s development,” he added.
Also speaking, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Central Planning Committee, said the Technology and Innovation Centre aligns with national policies promoting technical, engineering and STEM education.
She noted that the centre, alongside the proposed sports complex and scholarship endowment, would ensure students are well-prepared for tertiary education and equipped to compete in the global innovation ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the FCT Branch of FEGOCOWOSA, Mr Sanmi Ajayi, emphasised the need for effective coordination among committee members ahead of the Abuja event, calling for synergy and clear communication to ensure the success of all Diamond Jubilee activities.
