The International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) and the Geological Society of Nigeria (GSN) have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), marking a major milestone in strengthening ethical standards, professional integrity, and responsible practice within the geosciences.
The Geological Society of Nigeria (GSN) is the foremost professional body for geoscientists in Nigeria, providing national leadership in geoscience practice, policy engagement, professional development, and the promotion of responsible mineral and environmental stewardship.
Through this partnership, GSN reinforces its commitment to aligning Nigeria’s geoscience profession with globally accepted ethical principles and best practices.
The IAPG is a globally recognized, multidisciplinary scientific association dedicated to advancing geoethics and ethical awareness across the geosciences. With a presence in over 130 countries and its headquarters in Rome, Italy, IAPG is affiliated with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and maintains associate or observer status with leading institutions including AGI, GSA, GSL, CFES, and CIPSH.
The agreement has three key deliverables the first of which is that IAPG and GSN will collaborate as strategic partners to deliver joint initiatives, events, and capacity-building programmes in Nigeria and across Africa
As partners, the establishments will foster cooperation on projects of shared scientific, professional, and societal interest.
The collaborating bodies will also support one another through publications, workshops, conferences, and congresses focused on geoethics, research integrity, professional conduct, and responsible geoscience practice.
The MoA further reflects a shared commitment to diversity, inclusion, and ethical excellence, aimed at building a resilient and principled geoscience profession. Both organizations will formally acknowledge the partnership through mutual visibility on their platforms, reinforcing sustained collaboration and institutional trust.
A strategic alliance positioning Nigeria—and the Geological Society of Nigeria—at the forefront of ethical geoscience practice in Africa and beyond.
