The Kano State House of Assembly is taking a bold step to strengthen indigenous education by introducing a bill that mandates the use of the Hausa language as the primary medium of instruction in schools across the state.
The bill, titled Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, was presented by Hon. Musa Kachako (NNPP–Takai), who argued that early education in native languages fosters better understanding and academic performance.
Kachako said the initiative mirrors global best practices, noting that nations like China, Japan, and India have leveraged native language instruction to advance in science and technology.
He emphasized that teaching pupils in Hausa would improve comprehension, reduce school dropouts, and promote cultural pride while ensuring inclusive education for all learners.
The bill was referred to the House Committee on Education for detailed scrutiny and recommendations.
In a related development, Hon. Zakariyya Nuhu (NNPP–Gabasawa) moved a motion for the establishment of a College of Agriculture in Gabasawa Local Government Area to boost agricultural education and rural development.
The Assembly also received an executive request seeking approval to establish a new Polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area and a Kano Local Governments Service Commission. Both proposals were forwarded to the appropriate committees for consideration.
Speaker Ismail Falgore said the Assembly remains committed to supporting policies that strengthen education, agriculture, and local governance across Kano State.
