The Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) has applauded the Federal High Court’s decision striking out Taraba State’s blanket ban on mining activities, describing the ruling as a reaffirmation of the Federal Government’s constitutional authority over the sector and a boost for job security and workers’ rights.
National President of the union, Comrade Hamza Muhammad, said the judgement would protect the livelihoods of miners and prevent policies that undermine economic activity, while stressing that it should not be misconstrued as approval for illegal mining.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Francis Kadiri at the weekend, Muhammad commended the judiciary for what he described as its commitment to justice and the rule of law.
“I commend the judiciary for upholding justice and the rule of law. We urge Northern governors to focus on building their states rather than imposing blanket bans that harm communities and the economy,” he said.
He, however, cautioned that the ruling does not give licence to illegal mining, noting that mining activities must be conducted responsibly and in compliance with existing regulations.
According to him, the union supports environmental protection measures and responsible mining practices in line with Executive Order Number Five, and called on governments at all levels to engage relevant stakeholders in the sector.
“Mining can be done responsibly with proper environmental safeguards. We support efforts to protect the environment in line with Executive Order Number Five, and we call on governments to work with stakeholders, particularly labour unions, to develop sustainable mining practices,” he said.
Muhammad added that collaboration rather than prohibition was key to unlocking the economic potential of the mining sector, urging state governments to pursue policies that promote development and employment.
“Let us build our states, not block progress,” he added.
