The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has slammed a fine of N628 million on eight Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) for failing to adhere to the monthly energy limits for unmetered customers during the period July to September 2024.
The DisCos involved in this sanction include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NERC confirmed that the affected companies were required to provide credit adjustments to the impacted customers by May 15, 2025.
According to the statement, “Under Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 (EA 2023), the commission has taken action against eight DisCos – Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola – for not fully complying with the energy caps set by the commission between July and September 2024.”
NERC said that the fine was part of its commitment to ensuring compliance with regulations and safeguarding consumers’ interests in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
