President Tinubu declares state of emergency on security training institutions

President Bola Tinubu has declared an emergency on training facilities for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, citing concerns over their outdated condition.

The announcement was made by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee on the Overhaul of Security Training Institutions, during an on-the-spot inspection of facilities in Lagos. Mbah, accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Committee Secretary and former Inspector-General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu of the Special Protection Unit (SPU), said the committee has 30 days to submit a comprehensive report to NEC for further action.

Mbah said President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the continued use of outdated facilities to train security personnel who are expected to uphold human dignity in their duties.

He explained that the President issued the directive during the last NEC meeting on October 23, noting that the current state of security training institutions “does not align with his vision of growing the economy to one trillion dollars in the next five years.”

The governor added that Tinubu emphasised the urgent need to modernise these institutions to meet global standards.
