Why I don’t regret stopping Obasanjo’s third term agenda – Senator Saror

Professor Daniel Saror

Former Senator representing Benue North-East, Professor Daniel Saror, has spoken on his involvement in stopping the third-term agenda linked to former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

He disclosed this in an interview with Vanguard Newspaper.

Truthng reports that he said he has no regrets about opposing the plan and believes the country might have taken a different direction if the move had succeeded.

According to him, allowing a president to remain in office beyond the constitutional limit could create serious problems for the nation’s democratic system.

The former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University explained that extending a leader’s time in power can make it very difficult for that person to eventually leave office.

He said once a leader stays longer than the approved terms, the chances of stepping down become very small.

Saror added that similar situations have occurred in some African countries where leaders stayed in power for many years.

He said such long stays have often led to political tension and slowed democratic progress in those countries.

No I don’t regret stopping Obasanjo third term plan, Nigeria would’ve been a different place. Once you go beyond the third term, the chances of that person stepping down are almost zero. It’s happening in other African countries,” he said.
