2 scavengers in court for allegedly stealing security lights

Two men, Hamza Naziru, 18, and Mohammed Muritala, 22, on Thursday, appeared before a Karu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing security lights.

The defendants, who claimed to be scavengers, were charged with criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, mischief and theft.

Both defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that one Bello, a retired military man, resident in Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on Feb. 12.

“The complainant alleged that the defendants jointly conspired, entered his house at the above mentioned address and cut off his security lights that were mounted on his fence.

“After cutting the lights on the fence, the defendants climbed the fence and started removing other lights, before they were caught and arrested,” Adeyanju told the court.

The offences, he said, contravened sections 97, 348, 327 and 288 of the Penal Code.

The Judge, Malam Isa Adamu, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each, and one surety in like sum each.

He adjourned the case until April 24 for hearing.
