APC’s failed promises, persecution pushed me to PDP – Saraki

In anticipated 2023 general election, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said he left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because the party reneged on its promises to Nigerians.

Receiving, at the weekend, hundreds of APC members in Ilorin, Kwara State, that defected to the PDP, Saraki also alleged undue persecution by the ruling party.

His words: “I didn’t leave APC for fun. I did so because the party failed to fulfil its campaign promises to Nigerians. It failed woefully along this line.

“Also, I was taken to all cadres of courts in Nigeria. Even as I didn’t study law, I was almost becoming a lawyer because of my familiarity with so many legal concepts. But in the end, I was vindicated.”

The former Kwara governor, while describing Nigeria as a great nation with unparalleled human and economic potential, urged Nigerians to vote for PDP in the 2023 general elections to save it from collapsing in the hands of APC led government.

Speaking on the ‘O To Ge’ movement against him and his supporters in Kwara in 2019, Saraki said the political revolution allegedly thrived under unfounded propaganda by members of the opposition party in the state.

He believed that despite the development, an average Kwara voter had seen the difference between leadership by the people, which he stood for and leadership by egocentric elements.

Leading the defectors, Mr. Kayode Ogunlowo from Ajase Ipo, in Irepodun Local Council and Saka Babatunde from Iwo in Isin Council Council alleged that the APC government in the state jettisoned frontline members of the party who stuck out their necks for its electoral victory.

“We can say that the APC government in Kwara is an ingrate. Many of us that used propaganda to usher it to power had since been sidelined. They, even, jailed some of us for expressing our minds and for criticising some of their obnoxious policies.

“But the good news is that the same propagandists are still very much around, and we shall surely use them to oust the APC government in Kwara this time around,” they said.

Highlight of the event was the distribution of PDP membership card to the new members by the state chairman, Babatunde Mohammed. Besides, heaps of brooms, APC symbol, were burnt publicly by the defectors.
