
The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) on Thursday said the challenges bedeviling the Nigerian building/construction industry can be overcome through the diligent implementation of strategic policies and continuous engagement of relevant stakeholders at various levels.
President of the Institute, Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa who spoke at the Opening Ceremony of Year 2025 Builders Day, in Abuja, called on stakeholders at various levels to commit to seven strategic policy ideas which if diligently implemented, will lead the way greater growth and development of the industry.
According to the NIOB President, the government of all states across the federation should be encouraged to domesticate the National Building Code in their states to enable the enactment and of laws that lead to sustainable and orderly development of societies.
He said it is important that State Governors put in place, the Urban and Regional Planning Laws, Physical Planning Permit Regulations and the Building Control Regulation Laws.
Ewa called for the enforcement of professional standards in the industry, stating that every builder must adhere to established building codes and ethical standards.
Discussing the crucial importance of continuous professional development and awareness in building construction, Ewa stated: “We must continue to educate the public on the risks of employing unqualified builders and the importance of using certified professionals.”
According to him, stronger regulations and enforcement authorities must strengthen policies that eliminate quackery while enforcing building standards, and ensuring that violators are held accountable.
He renewed the advocacy for professionalism and delivery of standard services saying: “Regardng the use of quality materials, the industry must ensure that only high-quality materials are used for construction, as substandard materials compromise structural integrity.”
According to him, collaboration among stakeholders such as builders, engineers, architects, and regulatory bodies is necessary as it will help to safeguard the integrity of the industry.
He called for the enhancement of skills development through continuous training, mentorship, and skills acquisition. He said if the nuggets are adopted and prioritized, it will foster a competent and professional workforce in the industry and lead to the realization of the set goals of the sector.
He said: “As we celebrate Builders’ Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to excellence, safety, and professionalism. Let us be the vanguard of change, ensuring that every building we construct stands as a testament to quality, durability, and safety. The legacy of our profession depends on the choices we make today.”
