The President, Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Bldr. Sir. Alderton Ewa Ewa, has expressed worry that incidents of building collapse and substandard construction remain a major concern, often due to weak enforcement or lack of professional oversight.
He stated this during a press conference to herald the forthcoming 55th Builders’ Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), scheduled to hold from Tuesday, 19th August to Friday, 22nd August 2025, with the opening ceremony on Wednesday, 20th August 2025, at the Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.
According to him, the theme of this year’s conference is: “Advancing Builders’ Knowledge and Skills for Effective Enforcement of Building Regulatory Laws for Sustainable Development.”
He added that this conference aims to bridge that gap through capacity building, policy engagement, and professional collaboration.
“We acknowledge that some states in Nigeria have already domesticated building regulatory laws and are actively enforcing them, while others are still in the process. Our advocacy is for nationwide adoption and consistent implementation to ensure public safety and professional accountability across the federation.
The conference will feature:

Technical sessions on regulatory compliance, sustainable building practices, and digital innovations in construction management Professional development workshops Recognition and fellowship awards for distinguished individuals and stakeholders
An exhibition of construction technologies and services
He pointed out that Ebonyi state was chosen because it has in recent years emerged as a model of visionary infrastructure development and urban renewal. Hosting our conference here is both a recognition of these achievements and an opportunity to engage with local stakeholders on sustainable building practices.
