Cholera: 1,178 deaths in 37,819 suspected cases –NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC) has revealed that Nigeria has recorded 1,178 deaths from Cholera in 37,819 suspected cases in 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory as of August 14.

This was disclosed by the NCDC DG, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday, in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The NCDC boss stated that the most affected states include Benue, Delta, Zamfara, Gombe, Bayelsa, Kogi and Sokoto, also Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Kebbi, Cross River, Niger, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Yobe, Kwara, Enugu, Adamawa, Katsina, Borno, Taraba, and the FCT.

He also said there have been minor improvements in cases so far highlighting the reduced number of cases witnessed in the last 2 weeks.

“Bauchi (773), Niger (284), Zamfara (253), and Katsina (217) account for 78.1% of 1,956 cases reported in the last two weeks.

“Since the beginning of the year, a total of 1,938 samples have been collected with positive cases as follows – 277 Rapid Diagnosis Test (RDT), positive only.

“82 culture positive; 359 RDT and culture positive. The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) for laboratory confirmation by culture, is 23 %,” he said.

The NCDC boss revealed that no new state reported cases in week 31. “A total of 770 suspected cases were reported this week representing a 34% decrease, compared to 1,162 suspected cases recorded in week 30,” he disclosed. He also added that the national multi-sectoral EOC activated at level 2 continues to coordinate the national response to the cholera outbreak,
