Ethiopia has joined a new Africa-wide health financing reform programme aimed at strengthening investment in healthcare and building more resilient and sustainable financing systems.
The Ethiopian government said the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms to enhance public financing for the health sector while maintaining fiscal discipline.
It said the programme recognises healthcare investment as a key driver of economic growth, labour productivity and long-term human capital development.
Under the initiative, Ethiopia will receive technical and analytical assistance, including a comprehensive review of the macroeconomic and fiscal factors shaping healthcare financing.
The review is expected to generate evidence-based recommendations to support policy decisions and identify practical measures to improve the efficiency and sustainability of health sector financing.
The government also pledged to deepen collaboration between finance and health institutions and strengthen cooperation with regional partners to fast-track implementation of the reforms and share best practices.
A joint technical team will coordinate implementation of the programme, oversee policy analysis and facilitate dialogue on health financing reforms.
Officials said the initiative would help strengthen Ethiopia’s healthcare financing system while contributing to wider efforts to improve health financing across Africa.
