Federal Govt Opens Applications for SMDF-EMERGE Mining Fund

The Federal Government of Nigeria has opened applications for the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF) EMERGE programme, an initiative designed to provide funding for mineral exploration, development of critical minerals, and research aimed at boosting Nigeria’s mining sector.

Applications for the programme open on Monday, August 3, 2026, with funding targeted at licensed junior mining companies, firms involved in critical minerals development and processing, as well as researchers in tertiary institutions.

Under the initiative, eligible junior and early-stage mining companies can access up to 70 per cent funding for mineral exploration projects, while companies focusing on critical minerals and mineral processing technologies are also eligible for funding of up to 70 per cent.

The programme will also provide up to 100 per cent funding for Master’s and PhD researchers, universities and research institutions undertaking studies that support the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development said the initiative, being implemented through the SMDF EMERGE programme, is aimed at funding the “first mile” of mining by supporting exploration, innovation, research and human capital development.

According to the ministry, the programme is expected to strengthen local capacity, promote investment in critical minerals and encourage research that will drive value addition and sustainable growth in the mining industry.

Stakeholders in the mining sector, including geologists, mining entrepreneurs, researchers and academic institutions, have been encouraged to apply through the programme’s online portal.

Applications can be submitted through the SMDF EMERGE website, while prospective applicants may also obtain further information by scanning the QR code provided on the programme’s official publicity materials.
