In a country where more than 60 per cent of the population is young, discussions about youth inclusion in governance have become increasingly prominent. Yet translating this demographic advantage into meaningful political and socio-economic influence remains a significant challenge.
Against this backdrop, the Oladele John Nihi (OJN) Foundation has steadily built a platform that connects youthful potential with purposeful leadership.
As the foundation prepares for the 7th Edition of its Annual Lecture Series in 2026, the event represents more than an annual gathering. It has evolved into a sustained intervention in youth development, leadership cultivation and civic engagement.
The strength of the OJN Annual Lecture Series lies in its thematic progression. Rather than relying on broad rhetoric, each edition has been deliberately designed to address the specific political, social and economic realities confronting Nigerian youths at a particular moment in time.
A review of previous editions reveals a deliberate and progressive roadmap towards leadership development and empowerment.
The journey began during a period of global uncertainty with the 1st Edition, which examined the Impact of COVID-19 on Youth Political Participation in Nigeria. The lecture laid the foundation for discussions on youth engagement and leadership.
Building on this, the 2nd Edition issued a direct call for greater youth participation in governance through the theme Towards Youthful Governance in Nigeria: Time to Work the Talk.
As the national political climate evolved, the 3rd Edition focused on the prevailing political atmosphere, encouraging young Nigerians to redefine their roles in society through commitment, resilience and action.
This momentum continued into the 4th Edition, which explored The Political Intrigues and Prospects for Consolidating Leadership, equipping participants with insights into the complexities of governance and political leadership.
Recognising that sustainable political participation often depends on economic empowerment, the 5th Edition shifted attention to Youth Entrepreneurship and Empowerment, presenting enterprise development as a pathway to broader socio-economic progress.
The 6th Edition, Youth Innovating for Impact, brought these themes together by highlighting the importance of adaptive leadership, ethical entrepreneurship and social responsibility in addressing contemporary challenges.
What distinguishes the Oladele John Nihi Annual Lectures from many conventional conferences is the consistency of the programme and its long-term focus on youth development. Founded by Ambassador Oladele John Nihi—whose journey from student union activism to serving as Vice-President of the Pan-African Youth Union (West Africa) offers a compelling example of leadership progression—the platform has become a catalyst for civic engagement and personal growth.
The earlier editions focused on addressing barriers to youth participation in politics and governance. By emphasising commitment, resilience and action during critical political periods, the lectures encouraged young Nigerians to move beyond passive political involvement and become active stakeholders in the democratic process.
The foundation’s later focus on entrepreneurship and social responsibility further broadened its impact. By linking governance with economic self-reliance, the lecture series has provided participants with practical perspectives on enterprise development, innovation and community-centred leadership.
Equally important is the consistency with which the programme has been delivered. Held annually on July 15, the lectures have become a reliable platform for mentorship and dialogue, bringing together statesmen, policy experts and industry leaders to engage directly with young people.
Attention is now turning to the 2026 edition.
As the lecture series enters its seventh chapter, it is poised to reinforce nearly a decade of sustained advocacy for youth inclusion and leadership development. Its continued success sends a clear message to policymakers across Nigeria: meaningful youth participation is no longer a symbolic gesture but an essential requirement for sustainable national development.
Through continuous education, mentorship and cross-generational engagement, the OJN Foundation has demonstrated that when young people are provided with the right opportunities and support structures, they are capable of driving meaningful change and shaping the future of the nation.
