Global affairs analyst Victor Okhai has expressed concerns about the lack of ideology in Nigerian political parties, describing them as mere tools for acquiring power. Speaking during an interview with ireporteronline on Monday.
Okhai compared Nigeria’s political system to Ghana’s, highlighting the stark differences.
He stated, “In Nigeria, political parties are essentially Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for gaining power. Ideology doesn’t factor into their activities, unlike in Ghana and many other countries, where parties are founded on clear beliefs and principles. Members grow within these parties based on shared ideologies. Unfortunately, this is not the case here, where integrity is a significant challenge.”
Okhai also commented on the 2024 Ghanaian presidential election, calling it a triumph for democracy. According to him, the election was driven by young voters disenchanted with the current administration, leading to a clear mandate for change.
“The Ghanaian people, particularly the youth, were frustrated with the state of governance and used their votes to demand change. It was essentially a vote of no confidence in the administration. Their electoral body respected the will of the people, marking a victory for democracy,” he added.
This statement highlights the challenges facing Nigeria’s political landscape and offers a broader perspective on governance in Africa.
