Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) corps members of adequate security and better welfare.
The governor gave the assurance on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of Batch B Stream I corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp on Friday in Iseyin Area of the state.
Makinde, represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Wasilat Adegoke, also assured NYSC of the state government’s continued support for the scheme.
He said all relevant agencies and stakeholders in the state had been directed to treat the concerns of corps members with utmost priority.
“Your security is a matter we take seriously. I assure you that all necessary measures have been put in place to protect you throughout your service year,” he said.
Makinde urged the corps members to embrace the values of integrity, hard work, respect for cultural diversity, and peaceful coexistence.
He also encouraged them to explore the beauty of the state, engage with the people, respect customs, and contribute to the development of their host communities.
The governor urged the corps members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme during their orientation with all seriousness.
“Many of your predecessors have become job creators through the skills they acquired during the service year.
“In today’s world, self-reliance and innovation are keys to economic survival. You too can become a success story,” he said.
In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Peters Kayode, urged the corps members to embrace the privileges of the service year for personal growth and learning.
Kayode also advised them to participate actively in all camp activities, particularly the SAED training.
“The three-week orientation includes physical training, paramilitary drills, intellectual engagements, citizenship, leadership grooming, and SAED training.
“These activities are designed to prepare you for post-camp and post-service realities, making you self-reliant and well-rounded.
“Participating diligently in these activities is crucial for your development.
“I encourage you to exercise caution, dress modestly in approved NYSC kits, and always comport yourself appropriately.
“Learn about your host culture and contribute to the unity and advancement of Oyo State and Nigeria,” he said.
Truthng reports that 2,376 corps members were posted to the state.
NAN also reports the oath of allegiance was administered by Justice Kareem Adedokun, who represented the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Iyabo Yerima.
