A under the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aggrieved Youths Movement has called for fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the selection of the party’s candidate for the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial election, insisting that Okehi Local Government Area deserves another opportunity to produce the senator.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Ihiovi Mukhtar, the group urged party leaders and stakeholders to ensure that the process of selecting the APC candidate is transparent and aligned with internal democracy and established party guidelines.
The group said discussions around the 2027 senatorial race have intensified across Kogi Central, particularly amid concerns over the influence of political stakeholders in shaping the district’s political direction.
It also raised concerns about reports suggesting that some individuals who did not participate in the party’s screening process may still be seeking access to the APC ticket, warning that such moves could undermine fairness within the party.
Mukhtar stressed that the APC must guarantee equal opportunity for all aspirants, noting that equitable participation is essential to strengthening internal cohesion and public trust.
According to the group, an analysis of Kogi Central’s political history shows an imbalance in senatorial representation among the three local government areas that make up the district.
It stated that Okene Local Government Area has held the senatorial seat for seven terms since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, Adavi for three terms, while Okehi has produced a senator only once.
“This reality underscores the need for fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the distribution of political opportunities across Ebiraland,” the statement said.
The group argued that Okehi, which currently produces the district’s representative in the Senate, should again be considered for continuity, citing its contribution to the development of the area and its relatively limited historical representation.
“As conversations about the 2027 senatorial election continue, many stakeholders believe that Okehi Local Government Area deserves serious consideration once again,” it added.
It further called on political leaders to prioritise unity and collective progress in determining the future leadership of Kogi Central, insisting that the district needs a representative capable of bridging divides and advancing shared interests.
“In the spirit of justice, fairness and equity, the question remains: should Okehi not be given another opportunity to continue its representation of Kogi Central?” the group asked.
