Mining Entrepreneurship: MCO partners ECOWAS Youth Parliament

As part of efforts to exploit the job-creation potentials of the Nigeria mining sector, the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) has committed to deeding its support for youth entrepreneurship as it agreed to work with the ECOWAS Youth Parliament for the development of mining business, a development that is expected to lead to the establishment of sustainable mining industries headed by young people who are mentored by the Engr Simon Nkom-led team at the MCO.

The Director – General, Mining Cadastre Office (MCO), Engr Obadiah Simon Nkom who assured a delegation of the ECOWAS Youth Parliament of his continued support and guidance, when the Parliament declared him ‘Epitome of Hope’ with an Award of Credence, recently, in Abuja, said ‘youth are the leaders of the future,’ adding that they need to be given the support necessary to build the African continent in the classy manner that they have envisioned it.

The Director General, who urged the delegates to be good ambassadors of their generation, advised them to be hardworking as well as promote peace and unity for meaningful development in the country.

Discussing how government is creating an enabling environment for youth across the world, Engr Nkom explained that the Agency will soon migrate to online cadastre system, a higher level in Mineral Title administration, stating that online system can be accessed from anywhere in the world. He therefore encouraged them to key into this development while shunning social ills.

The leader of the delegation, Ambassador Jabir Aminu Maitùrare disclosed that the Parliament is involved in various seminars and sensitisation programmes to promote peace and entrepreneurship, adding that the youth, being the backbone of the society need to emulate visionary leaders, align with their visions as well as tap into their wealth of experience.

He emphasized the need to tackle illegal mining activities at various sites in the country, saying that youth are encouraged to go into mining sector given the development going on under the watch of Engr. Nkom.

He said the Parliament singled out Engr. Nkom for the award due to his contributions to nation building, credible leadership and youth development among others, especially in the mining sector.

Ambassador Aminu added that Engr Nkom’s contributions to Mining sector and the new shape of development in the Agency under his watch are regarded as rare qualities. He said, ‘the award is not just to honour, but also to submit to the mentorship of the Director General especially in the area of encouraging young entrepreneurs in mining.’
