NESREA seals EFAB, 12 others for flouting environmental laws

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed the premises of EFAB and twelve other recalcitrant businesses in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Director General explained that the Agency followed due process before finally clamping down on the organizations, stating that it diligently communicated the environmentally deplorable state of the respective thirteen premises to the organizations before finally sealing them as they failed to cooperate with the regulatory agency.

During the enforcement exercise in Abuja on Friday, March 15, the Director General of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro said it is the mandate of NESREA to ensure compliance as well as enforce compliance with extant Environmental Standards, Guidelines, Rules and Regulations in Nigeria, adding that the Agency will leave no stone unturned in the quest to ensure that both corporate and individual entities comply with environmental regulations in the country.

The Director General, who was represented by the Director, Inspection and Enforcement, Mr. Abdulsalam Isa, said in line with the Presidential Bond and as a fall out of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s retreat in Kaduna, Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement was one of the Agency’s KPI for 2024.

While saying that the facilities were shut down for failing to abate environmental concerns ranging from Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Audit (EA), Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Permit in both Green and Brown Environment.

According to the Agency, while ten facilities in the green sector were sealed for various environmental crimes, three facilities in the brown sector were sealed as well.

He stated: “It was observed that some of the facilities earlier sealed had broken the Federal Government seals, however, such facilities are to face punitive measures for their actions.”
