A former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, has paid glowing tribute to the resilience and patriotism of the Nigerian people, calling them the unsung heroes of the nation’s democratic journey.
He made this comment in a heartfelt Independence Day message he personally signed on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Kachikwu turned the spotlight away from politicians and instead honoured the sacrifices of ordinary Nigerians, whom he described as the “burden bearers” of the nation.
According to him, despite decades of economic and political challenges, citizens should be praised for keeping the peace, holding on to hope, and choosing unity over division.
“Today, I celebrate the heroism and patriotism of the Nigerian people who have kept the peace in spite of hope deferred,” Kachikwu stated, referencing Proverbs 13:12 to underscore the strength of the national spirit.
While acknowledging the failures of past leadership, Kachikwu’s message was ultimately one of hope, faith, and renewal. He encouraged leaders to rise to the moment and finally deliver on the long-promised vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.
“On this day, I can’t help but think of the sacrifices of our heroes past and wonder what they would say if they saw the Nigeria they laboured and sacrificed for in the here and now of October 1st, 2025.
“I can’t help but think about the sacrifices our overburdened masses are making as they are once again asked to keep faith and hope against hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
“It is to this sacrifice and hope that I want to speak to today. The majority of our people who are helpless and hapless are the burden bearers of decades of mostly failed leadership. In their voicelessness they continue to carry the weight of our nation’s many problems, for were they to ever vent their collective frustrations, our country would implode.
“As they search fruitlessly for their inheritance in the promise that was and is Nigeria, they continue to sacrificially tolerate and forgive the many failed promises of our leaders.
“The question most Nigerians are asking of their leaders today is when will their desires come? When will the Nigeria of their dreams emerge? When will this nation work for everyone irrespective of tribe, tongue and religion? From generation to generation, father after father has sold the promise of a better Nigeria to son after son. Today, they collectively ask their leaders; Are you the ones to usher in a better Nigeria, or should we look to another?” he said.
As Nigerians across the country mark Independence Day with celebrations and reflection, Kachikwu’s message serves as a reminder that, through the unwavering courage of its people, the dream of a better Nigeria remains alive.
