NYSC DG charges corps members on nation building

Olakunle Nafiu

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has reminded corps members of their vital role in Nigeria’s future.

He gave the reminder while addressing corps members during the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I swearing-in at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger.

He said Nigeria belongs to all citizens, but corps members hold a greater stake because the nation’s survival depends on its youth.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, but you have more at stake as young, brilliant, and educated individuals with a bright future,” he said.

He assured them of their welfare, noting that President Bola Tinubu had increased their allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.

Nafiu urged corps members posted to Niger to make the best use of their time, despite the current condition of the camp.

He said the state government was working to improve the facilities through the construction of a permanent orientation camp.

“Subsequent batches will find a better camp, as I’m informed the state is building a permanent orientation camp,” he added.

He stressed the importance of integrating with host communities, appreciating their cultures, and giving back through selfless service.

The DG encouraged corps members to support government efforts by helping others acquire education, especially in their primary assignment schools.

Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger advised corps members to promote national development and shun actions that may disturb public peace.

Bago, represented by Commissioner for youths and sports development, Yahaya Gulbin-Boka, said the state prioritised corps members’ safety, welfare, and overall well-being.

“As a government, we’ll keep providing an enabling environment for you to thrive in the state,” he said.

Earlier, Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, NYSC Coordinator in Niger, highlighted the importance of the orientation course and national integration.

She urged corps members to maintain discipline, avoid drug abuse and cultism, and participate actively in training programmes.
