Police arraign 2 over alleged possession of Indian hemp in Ekiti

Two men, Femi Olamilekan and Muhammed Nurudeen, were on Wednesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of Indian hemp.

The defendants, Olamilekan, 25, and Nurudeen, 19, of unknown addresses, are facing a one-count charge of possession of Indian hemp.

The prosecutor, Insp Ayodeji Aina, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 19 at about 2.00 p.m. in Igbemo-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants were found in possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

Aina said the offence contravened Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Paul Ayantoyinbo, urged the court to grant bail, assuring that they would not jump bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20,000 each with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 13 for hearing.
