Police arraign man, 57, over alleged shop breaking, theft

The Police on Friday arraigned a 57-year-old man, Idowu Owolabi, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged shop breaking and stealing.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of shop breaking, stealing and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Insp Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on July 23 at about 3:00 a.m., at Oke- Iyinmi area in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant and others at large, broke into the shop of one Orimiloye Funke.

Bamikole said that the defendant and others at large stole provision goods  and other valuable items valued at N529, 070, belonging to the complainant.

He also alleged that the defendant and others at large conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace.

According to him, the offence contravened Section 324, 302 and 181(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefunke Anoma, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case till Sept. 2 for hearing.
