President Biden confers US’s highest civilian award to Clinton, Soros, Messi

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and controversial philanthropist George Soros received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden at a ceremony in the White House.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden conferred the country’s highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, on 19 distinguished individuals, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, football star Lionel Messi, controversial philanthropist George Soros, and actor Denzel Washington.

The award was presented to those who have made exceptional contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal achievements.

The ceremony, held at the White House on Saturday afternoon, was attended by several prominent figures, including former President Bill Clinton and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

However, Messi, due to a scheduling conflict, could not be present to receive his medal in person.

“This group of extraordinary individuals has shaped the culture and cause of America,” Biden said at the glittering event in the East Room.

“They leave an incredible mark on our country, their influence felt across the globe. From major cities to remote areas, they have brought people closer, showing us what is possible as a nation.”

Biden highlighted the significant impact of the recipients, calling them “cultural icons, humanitarians, rock stars, sports stars,” who, through their work, inspire, heal, and bring joy to many.

He praised their leadership in defending American values, especially when under attack.

Clinton, the only recipient to receive a standing ovation, was lauded for her distinguished career. “As a lawyer, she defended children’s rights.

As First Lady, she fought for universal healthcare and declared women’s rights are human rights,” the citation read. “Her career has been dedicated to an eternal truth – America’s ideals are sacred.”

Soros, an investor and philanthropist, was recognised for his lifelong efforts to support open societies. His son, Alex Soros, accepted the award on his behalf.

“As an immigrant who found freedom and prosperity in America, I am deeply moved by this honour,” Soros said in a statement, acknowledging the work of the Open Society Foundations.

Soros’s award, however, sparked controversy, drawing criticism from MAGA supporters and Republican leaders.

“Giving George Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a slap in the face of America,” said Republican leader Nikki Haley.

Critics have accused Soros of supporting soft-on-crime policies, while Biden’s supporters defended his work in promoting human rights and democracy worldwide.

Other recipients included conservationist Jane Goodall, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

The medal was also awarded posthumously to civil rights pioneer Fannie Lou Hamer, former Defence Secretary Ashton Carter, and others, with family members accepting on their behalf.
