The Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to identify and sanction police officers involved in the invasion of JKD TV Hamada Radio Network in Millennium City, Kaduna.
In a statement signed by its secretary, Ahmed Shekarawu, and Legal Adviser, Tobi Soniyi, IPI Nigeria said it received reports that a contingent of heavily armed policemen invaded the media organisation.
The institute condemned the alleged operation, describing the invasion of a media house as a disturbing reminder of the treatment of the press during Nigeria’s military era.
“Invading media houses in gestapo style is a stark reminder of what the media suffered during the military era,” IPI Nigeria said.
The organisation urged the police to stop involving themselves in civil disputes, arguing that anyone aggrieved by a report broadcast by a television or radio station should seek redress through the courts.
…Demands Accountability
IPI Nigeria said it had hoped the appointment of Disu as Inspector-General of Police would usher in greater respect for human rights and press freedom.
However, it said the reported incident in Kaduna had raised concerns about the protection of journalists and media organisations.
The institute urged the IGP to ensure that the police officer who allegedly ordered the operation is identified and punished if found to have authorised an unlawful action.
IPI Nigeria also called on the police authorities to issue an advisory to police formations nationwide to avoid becoming involved in civil matters and to prevent officers from being used to intimidate civilians.
“The strongest weapon against reckless violation of people’s rights and media freedom by police officers is prompt identification and punishment of erring officers,” the organisation said.
General Manager, Security Guard Allegedly Arrested
According to IPI Nigeria, armed policemen allegedly entered the station and arrested the General Manager, Charles Abah, as well as a security guard.
The organisation said the police claimed they had instructions to arrest journalist Zainab Salihu Yabagi over a video explainer produced by JKD Radio & Television concerning Ibrahim Kabir Masari, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs.
IPI Nigeria said it had also learnt that the Kaduna State Police Command had declared Yabagi wanted.
The media organisation called for due process and respect for constitutionally guaranteed rights in any action taken in connection with the matter.
..Calls for Responsible Journalism
IPI Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to ethical, responsible and professional journalism and urged journalists and media practitioners to uphold those principles.
The organisation also called on its members and other media professionals to recommit to professional standards, particularly as the country approaches another election season.
