…Warns against one-party state ahead of 2027
Revered cleric and convener of the Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria, Prophet Isa El-Buba, has declared support for the presidential ambition of Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader, Prince Adewole Adebayo, ahead of the 2027 general election, saying Nigeria needs a new direction and must not slide into a one-party state.
The outspoken cleric made the declaration while addressing delegates at an SDP event in Bauchi State, where he urged Nigerians to rally behind leaders capable of addressing the country’s deepening challenges.
El-Buba said his decision to back Adebayo followed his conviction that Nigeria requires competent, visionary and people-centred leadership to tackle insecurity, poverty, unemployment and other pressing national concerns.
Addressing party faithful, youth leaders and delegates, he described the gathering as a significant moment in Nigeria’s political journey and congratulated the SDP for organising what he called a peaceful and successful event.
The cleric lamented that despite Nigeria’s enormous human and natural resources, millions of citizens continue to struggle with hardship and insecurity.
According to him, years of poor leadership have denied Nigerians, particularly young people, opportunities for economic advancement, quality education and a better future.
“Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources, intelligent people and great potential, yet millions still suffer from insecurity, unemployment, poverty and injustice,” he stated.
He argued that the current realities confronting the country demand urgent action and collective commitment from citizens determined to change the nation’s trajectory.
“Now is the time that we need to join forces together to rewrite history. Nigeria cannot continue to go through pain, frustration and clueless leadership,” he said.
El-Buba also warned against any attempt to weaken political competition in the country, insisting that democracy can only thrive where justice, fairness and inclusiveness prevail.
“Nigeria cannot go into a one-party state. Every system survives by justice and equity. Oppression is never the pathway to stability and peace cannot thrive in the midst of injustice,” he declared.
Throwing his weight behind Adebayo, the cleric announced that members of his movement would mobilise support for the SDP presidential hopeful ahead of the 2027 polls.
He said Nigerians seeking genuine national recovery should support leaders committed to restoring public confidence, rebuilding institutions and returning the country to the path of progress.
El-Buba further criticised vote-buying and political inducement, saying Nigerians have become more politically conscious and are no longer willing to exchange their future for temporary material benefits.
“Nobody will buy the conscience of Nigeria with money or a bag of rice. Nigerians are tired, and it is time to recover the glory of our country,” he stated.
Expressing optimism about the future, the cleric said the country was entering a new phase marked by a growing demand for accountable and purposeful leadership.
He congratulated SDP members and Nigerians generally, expressing confidence that the nation was on the threshold of political renewal and the emergence of what he described as a “new Nigeria.”
