Akwa Ibom Assembly Yet to Confirm Alleged Bill Criminalising Relationship With Married Men

Reports claiming that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is set to pass a bill prescribing a 10-year jail term for women who engage in relationships with married men have sparked reactions.

The report, which attributes the proposed legislation to the state Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, claims that the bill would criminalise sexual relationships between unmarried women and married men, with offenders allegedly facing imprisonment, while married men involved would be liable to a fine.

However, details of the alleged bill, including its title, sponsor and status before the Assembly, could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the office of the deputy governor are expected to clarify the matter.
