Nigeria will take a decisive step in redefining its economic narrative on Thursday, May 14, 2026, as key players in the solid minerals sector gather in Abuja for the maiden edition of the Solid Minerals Excellence Awards (SOMEA) 2026.
Scheduled to hold at the Abuja Continental Hotel, the high-profile event is expected to draw policymakers, global investors, members of the diplomatic corps, and industry leaders, all converging to celebrate what organisers describe as the “hidden giants” powering the nation’s future beyond oil.
For decades, Nigeria’s economy has been largely defined by crude oil revenues. However, beneath the surface lies a vast reserve of untapped mineral wealth—ranging from lithium critical to electric vehicle production, to gold, limestone, and rare earth elements essential for infrastructure and technology development. Stakeholders say the awards aim to reposition the sector from the margins to the mainstream of national economic discourse.
Endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the event has received backing from the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Henry Dele Alake, who commended the initiative as a timely intervention in promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices.
In an official communication, the minister noted that the awards align with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to improve transparency in the sector, strengthen investor confidence, and enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness in mining.
Project Coordinator, Femi Da-silva, said the initiative is designed to give long-overdue recognition to industry players whose contributions have largely gone unnoticed.
“For too long, the giants behind the literal foundation of our modern world have worked in the shadows,” he said. “With SOMEA, we are bringing the glamour, prestige, and national spotlight to a sector that will define the next century of Nigerian prosperity.”
The awards come at a time of significant transformation within the industry. Under ongoing reforms spearheaded by the ministry, Nigeria’s solid minerals sector is transitioning from largely informal and artisanal operations to a more structured, transparent, and investment-driven ecosystem. Analysts say this shift is already attracting increased global interest, positioning the country as an emerging hub for mining investment in Africa.
Organisers describe SOMEA as the “Oscars of the mining world,” with award categories designed to reflect excellence, innovation, and sustainability. Among the key categories are “Leading Mining Company of the Year,” “Excellence in Sustainable and Safe Operations,” and “Outstanding Contribution to Sector Growth.”
With the theme “Unlocking the Future,” the event is expected to serve not only as a recognition platform but also as a strategic signal to the international community that Nigeria is ready to harness its solid minerals potential.
Industry observers note that as the global economy accelerates toward cleaner energy and advanced manufacturing, demand for critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth elements is rising sharply—placing Nigeria in a potentially advantageous position if reforms are sustained.
The Solid Minerals Excellence Awards, they say, could become a defining benchmark for tracking progress in the sector, while reinforcing the country’s shift toward a more diversified and resilient economy.
