Celebrating Day 3 of National Geology Week 2024

Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, during a visit of the participants of the National Geology Week 2024 to the lawmaker, in Abuja, on Wednesday December 4, 2024.

 

Today, The Geological Society of Nigeria visited the National Assembly to emphasize the vital role of geology in national development. 

The team was received by the Chairman, House Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbwefi.

President of the Society, Mr. U. S. Malami emphasized the importance of Geology to national development. He said: “Here’s how geology contributes to a sustainable future:

“In Resource Management, Geology optimizes sustainable extraction of minerals and groundwater.”

“In Environmental Protection, it mitigates pollution and ensures safe land use practices.”

“In Disaster Risk Reduction, Geology helps in the assessment of geological hazards to enhance community resilience.”

According to Malami, “in Infrastructure Development, Geology informs safe construction practices through geological surveys.”

“In Climate Change Adaptation, Geology provides insights for adapting to climate impacts on resources.”

“In Public Health, Geology helps in the studies of groundwater and soil quality to safeguard health.”

“In Geoparks, it promotes geological heritage and sustainable tourism while benefiting local communities.”

According to the GSN President, integrating geological knowledge into national policies is essential for fostering sustainability and resilience in Nigeria.

“Let’s advocate for a future where geology plays a central role in our development,” he added.
