Chukwuemeka switches allegiance to Austria after FIFA approval

Former Chelsea FC midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has committed his international future to Austria after receiving clearance from FIFA.

Carney Chukwuemeka, 22, who currently plays for Borussia Dortmund, has completed a nationality switch that ends his long association with the England national football team at the youth level. This also means that he is no longer eligible to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Chukwuemeka was born in Vienna to Nigerian parents but grew up in England, where he developed through the national youth system. He represented England from Under-17 through to Under-20 level and was also called up to the Under-21 squad in 2023, though injury denied him a chance to feature.

With FIFA ratifying the switch, the midfielder is now eligible to play for Austria and could make his senior debut later this month.

Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, will face Ghana on March 27 before taking on South Korea on March 31 in international friendlies. The matches could offer Chukwuemeka an early opportunity to settle into Rangnick’s squad.

The decision comes amid a fresh chapter in the midfielder’s club career.

Truthng reports that Chukwuemeka secured a permanent £24 million move to Borussia Dortmund in August 2025 following an impressive loan spell. He made the move after struggling for regular minutes at Chelsea.

Since arriving at Signal Iduna Park, he has grown into a key figure in midfield, scoring five goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
