The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has approved stronger compliance and enforcement measures to curb engineering failures, improve professional standards and enhance public safety.
In a statement by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of COREN, Engr. Prof O.A.U. Uche, the decisions were reached at the council’s 190th Ordinary Council Meeting held on July 9, 2026, at its headquarters in Abuja.
As part of efforts to strengthen regulation, COREN approved the registration of 2,001 engineering practitioners, comprising 1,410 engineers, 227 engineering technologists, 15 engineering technicians, 334 engineering craftsmen and 15 expatriate practitioners.
It also approved the registration of 33 engineering firms across various areas of practice.
The council’s latest measures come amid recurring concerns over engineering failures and building collapses across the country.
COREN approved a comprehensive regulatory strategy that includes a nationwide public awareness campaign, an integrated digital compliance and verification platform, mandatory compliance with COREN requirements for engineering procurement and approvals, stronger Engineering Compliance Inspectorate Units and stricter enforcement of annual practising licence requirements.
The council also approved the establishment of a National Engineering Practice Database and enhanced collaboration with relevant government agencies to improve monitoring and enforcement.
It further approved a competency development programme for Engineering Regulation Inspection Officers to strengthen their capacity to detect and address regulatory violations.
COREN also directed a nationwide compliance audit of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to assess implementation of the approved enhanced entry-point policy for engineers in the public service. The council will also renew engagement with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation on the matter.
On renewable energy and energy efficiency, the council approved full accreditation for Sato Engineering Services Limited, Ibadan; EtinPower Limited, Benin; and CeeSolar Energy Limited, Abuja, under the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certification Scheme being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP).
It also considered certification examination results from seven training centres involving 478 candidates, of whom 177 passed.
The council directed the adoption of the COREN/NESP-approved Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training Curriculum at Enerplaz Paygo Solutions, Port Harcourt.
In a move to strengthen technical skills, COREN approved the automation of registration for engineering artisans and Skills Training Centres on its portal.
It also directed collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to develop National Occupational Standards for technical occupations including bicycle mechanics, GSM phone repairs, satellite installation, tractor operation and maintenance, motor body building and transmission repairs.
For engineering education, the council approved the implementation of the National Engineering Admission Quota and Carrying Capacity Enforcement Framework to strengthen quality assurance in engineering programmes in Nigerian universities.
It also approved revised terms of reference for its Codes and Standards Committee to strengthen the development, review, promotion and monitoring of engineering codes and standards.
In another major decision, COREN approved the adoption of the Engineering Sliding Scale of Fees in Nigeria (ESSOFIN).
The council will organise regional stakeholders’ engagement workshops before the end of 2026 to promote consultation, consensus-building and wider acceptance of the initiative.
