A Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, leaving multiple people injured, local media reported.
According to Peel Regional Paramedic Services, 18 people sustained injuries in the crash, including a child. Three of the injured individuals are in critical condition. Emergency medical teams responded promptly to the scene to provide necessary aid.
Local reports from CBC television indicate that the aircraft flipped upon landing, although the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Emergency response and investigation underway
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Toronto Pearson International Airport confirmed the incident, stating that emergency response teams were actively addressing the situation. “Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for,” the airport’s post read.
Authorities, including local police and paramedics, quickly established a staging area near the runway to assist those affected and assess the crash site.
Temporary disruption of airport operations
CTV News reported that all flight arrivals and departures were temporarily suspended following the crash. However, normal airport operations have since resumed.
Delta Airlines issued a statement confirming that the aircraft had 76 passengers and four crew members onboard at the time of the accident. The airline assured travelers that it was reaching out to affected customers and advised passengers to check their flight status via the Fly Delta app.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a ground stop at Toronto Pearson International Airport following the crash, as per Reuters.
Police statement on the incident
Peel Regional Police spokesperson Constable Sarah Patten provided an update, stating that the circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear. “There is a plane crash. However, we don’t know the circumstances surrounding it at this point,” she told Reuters.
She further noted that while most passengers were safely evacuated, authorities are still conducting investigations to ensure everyone is accounted for.
Recent air crashes raise safety concerns
The Toronto Pearson crash comes amid a series of recent aviation incidents across North America, raising concerns about air travel safety.
Earlier this month, a turboprop aircraft traveling from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska, disappeared mid-flight. The wreckage was later discovered on an ice floe drifting approximately five miles per day. Tragically, all 10 passengers aboard perished.
Additionally, late last month, a midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter at Reagan Washington National Airport resulted in 67 fatalities.
As investigations into the Toronto crash continue, aviation authorities and safety regulators will be closely monitoring the findings to prevent future incidents.
