Former Cross River Gov Liyel Imoke, Senator Bassey Resign From PDP

Liyel Imoke

A former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, and a former senator representing Cross River South, Gershom Bassey, have resigned their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The two political figures announced their decisions in separate letters addressed to their respective ward chairmen.

In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ward 9 in Calabar South Local Government Area, Bassey said his decision to leave the party takes immediate effect.

The former senator, who represented Cross River South in the 8th and 9th Senate, described the move as a difficult decision influenced by recent developments within the party.

Bassey noted that he had been a founding member of the PDP and contributed significantly to building the party into a formidable political platform.

He, however, said the internal challenges facing the party had made it difficult for him to remain optimistic about its future.

Similarly, Imoke announced his resignation in a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Itigidi Council Ward, Abi Local Government Area.

The former governor said the decision marked the end of his 28-year membership of the party.

According to him, the protracted challenges within the party had made it difficult for him to continue to effectively serve the organisation and the people.

Imoke, who said he had been a member of the PDP since 1998, expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party gave him during his political career.

He noted that the party provided him the platform to serve in several capacities, including as Presidential Special Adviser, Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Governor of Cross River State.

The resignation letter was acknowledged on March 3, 2026, by the Ward Chairman of the party in Itigidi Council Ward, Elder David Alobo James.
