
Abia Governor Alex Otti has appointed a new Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Emmanuel Meribole, to replace Professor Kenneth Kalu, who bowed out of the Abia Executive Council last week. Meribole’s appointment is on an acting basis.
The former SSG, Professor Kalu, left his position last week, stating that he was proceeding on a leave of absence.
Before his appointment, Dr Meribole was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Projects, a position offered to him by Governor Otti after his retirement as Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
According to a government statement, “To ensure a seamless transition, the handover process will commence on Monday, December 15, 2025. During this transition period, Professor Kenneth Kalu will work closely with Dr. Meribole to ensure the continuity of government operations and the smooth execution of the administration’s policies and programs.
“Emmanuel Meribole, a medical doctor, is a seasoned multi talented professional who retired as the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
“His contributions as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Projects have helped in driving key developmental initiatives across the State.
“His new role as Acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG) is a testament to his proven competence, dedication, and commitment to advancing the vision of the administration.
“Governor Otti expresses his deep appreciation to Professor Kenneth Kalu for his outstanding service and dedication to the people of Abia State”, the statement added.
