Morocco is taking bold steps to elevate its status as a global travel and tourism hub. By 2030, the country aims to nearly double its airport capacity, increasing it from 38 million to 80 million passengers annually. This monumental upgrade comes as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch unveiled the $390 million infrastructure plan, with Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport leading the charge. The flagship airport will expand its capacity to 23.3 million passengers. Popular tourist destinations Marrakech and Agadir will also see their airports upgraded, accommodating 14 million and 6.3 million passengers, respectively.
Boosting tourism and connectivity
Morocco’s airport expansion aligns seamlessly with its booming tourism sector. In the first 11 months of this year alone, the nation welcomed 15.9 million tourists, surpassing last year’s total. New air routes and improved infrastructure have been pivotal in this growth.
Beyond airports, Morocco is extending its high-speed rail network to connect key cities like Marrakech and Agadir. The expanded network, set for completion before the FIFA World Cup, will improve accessibility for domestic and international travellers. By 2040, the rail system aims to serve 43 cities and cover 87 percent of Morocco’s population.
Sports infrastructure for FIFA 2030
In tandem with these developments, Morocco is enhancing its sports facilities to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Plans include upgrading 45 stadiums and training centres across six cities. The centrepiece is a new 115,000-seat stadium near Casablanca, set to become one of the region’s largest.
Building Africa’s travel giant
Morocco’s ambitious infrastructure projects underscore its vision of becoming a leading African hub for travel and tourism. With enhanced connectivity, state-of-the-art facilities, and a robust tourism strategy, the nation is well-positioned to attract global visitors and investment.
As Morocco gears up for the world stage, its commitment to innovation and expansion signals a bright future for the country’s economy and reputation.
