The Nigerian Navy has arrested personnel involved in a clash with soldiers during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Bayelsa State on Friday.
The Navy confirmed the development following a public altercation that has since gone viral, captured in a 53-second video showing uniformed officers in a heated confrontation.
In the footage, a driver of a Hilux vehicle marked “Naval Police” steps out of his vehicle and exchanges words with another driver. Moments later, after returning to his vehicle, a soldier carrying a rifle approaches and throws a punch at the Naval Police driver, triggering a fight.
The situation quickly escalates into a free-for-all, with personnel from both sides exchanging blows as stunned civilians watch. The incident occurs as the President is leaving the venue of an official event in the state.
Reacting on Saturday via his X handle, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abi Folorunso, confirmed that those involved have been taken into custody and are undergoing disciplinary procedures.
“The affected personnel are in custody and already undergoing appropriate administrative and disciplinary procedures in accordance with extant military regulations,” he wrote.
