Comrade Hamza Mohammed

The President of the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW), Comrade Hamza Muhammad has applauded the Nigeria In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) under the Leadership of its Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa for the prompt and successful rescue of their members who were stranded in the Central African Republic (CAR).

In a statement issued by the Union on Wednesday, the union said Dabiri’s response is a show of unity and expresses love for every Nigerian at home and abroad.

“The swift intervention has brought relief to these workers who were subjected to inhumane treatment and abandonment by their employers.

“The workers, who were lured to CAR with false promises of employment, were forced to work for 11 months without pay, and their passports were confiscated.

The Union President appreciated NIDCOM’s efforts towards the safe evacuation of these workers to the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui, and arrangements are being made for their return to Nigeria.

He said, “We commend the officials of the Nigerian Embassy in CAR for their swift action and hospitality in providing temporary shelter to our members. We also appreciate the efforts of the CAR security agencies in ensuring the safe evacuation of our members”.

He also solicits that NIDCOM continue providing support to their members during this challenging time and to facilitate their safe return to Nigeria. We also call for the prosecution of the agent who lured our members into this job scam.

“Once again, we appreciate your efforts in rescuing our members and look forward to continued collaboration,” he said.
