Nnaji urges PPP collaboration on STI to boost economy

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, has called on both the private and public sectors to collaborate to develop the country’s science, technology, and innovation (STI) to boost its economy.

According to Nnaji, the 2024 Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Expo will promote indigenous products as well as boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

The Minister made this call during a press briefing on Tuesday, in Abuja.

“Developing the outcomes of science, technology, and innovation will fast-track the nation’s socio-cultural, economic, and political development.

“The theme aligns with the ministry’s objectives of promoting science, technology and innovation, facilitating the commercialization of research, development and innovation outcomes,’’ he stated.

Nnaji further explained that the purpose of the Expo is to unite innovators/inventors, research institutions, universities, federal and sub-national ministries, departments, and agencies in the private sector.

“This is to promote locally made goods and services, reduce the high cost of importation, enhance revenue generation and create employment opportunities.

”These initiatives are pivotal in advancing the Made in Nigeria Agenda, fuelled by indigenous inventions and innovations showcased during the event.

“The expo will feature such activities as an exhibition of research, development and innovation results, inventions and STI products and services,’’ he added.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST), Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye said focus on STI will enhance the economy.

“The entire world is facing challenges every new day. However, with science and technology, we will overcome all through innovations of using strands of smarter tools to curb with climate change, cyber cafe, nuclear  warfare and Nigeria will not be left behind in innovations to transit into the 4th industrial revolution and upgrade our services in all sectors of science, technology and innovation.”
