Rwanda strikes world-class lithium vein

Rwanda has made a major advancement in its critical minerals strategy after Aterian Plc announced the discovery of a ‘world-class’ lithium deposit in the country’s Southern Province. The find emerged from a joint venture launched in September 2024 between Aterian, Rio Tinto Mining and Exploration Ltd, and domestic partner Kinunga Mining Ltd. Together, the companies have been drilling across a 2,750‑hectare concession, revealing 19 lithium-rich pegmatite zones, along with tantalum and cesium deposits.

This move aligns with Rwanda’s ambition to diversify its mining sector beyond traditional minerals and to integrate deeper into the booming lithium supply chain that powers electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and wider green technologies.

High-grade lithium exceeds global thresholds

Initial assays from July 2025 have revealed lithium concentrations of 3.2 percent over a 3.5‑metre interval—more than twice the industry threshold for high-grade lithium (1.5 percent). The quality of the discovery has been compared favourably with major international sites such as Red Mountain in the United States and Patriot Battery Metals in Canada.

Charles Bray, the Executive Chairman of Aterian Plc, described the result as ‘world-class’, emphasising both the deposit’s quality and its potential. However, he also cautioned that further exploration is required to determine the deposit’s full extent, depth continuity, and the logistics surrounding its extraction.

The find represents ‘a very encouraging step forward for Rwanda and for our joint venture,’ Bray added.

Discovery enhances Rwanda’s green-energy credentials

Lithium is a crucial metal for rechargeable batteries and renewable energy systems—its global demand driven by the electric vehicle revolution and clean-energy goals. Rwanda’s early success in this sphere enhances its credentials as a responsible and forward‑looking mining nation, complementing its existing reputation for ethical extraction practices.

The newfound deposit also opens up prospects for local value‑addition. By processing lithium domestically, Rwanda could capture a larger share of the value chain, attract foreign investment, and benefit from technology transfer. This aligns with President Paul Kagame’s broader economic transformation agenda.

Next steps: proving commercial viability

While the initial assay is promising, the path to commercial production remains staged:

  • Expand drilling to evaluate depth and the continuity of the lithium zones.
  • Conduct feasibility studies to assess extraction costs and methods.
  • Evaluate infrastructure needs—transport, energy, processing capacity—and community impacts.

If the deposit proves economically viable, Rwanda could emerge as Africa’s next critical‑minerals powerhouse, securing investment and fostering sustainable development amid rising global demand.

Implications for Rwanda’s future

Rwanda’s discovery arrives during an intensifying global race to secure ethically sourced lithium, particularly outside China. As manufacturers and governments seek new supply chains, Kigali may be uniquely placed to offer both high‑grade material and a stable investment environment.

For now, all eyes are on Aterian, Rio Tinto, and Kinunga as they chart a course toward turning a promising lithium find into a strategic resource—potentially reshaping Rwanda’s economic landscape and global standing in the green‑energy era.
