Tanzanian police are currently investigating a disturbing viral video showing five men allegedly gang-raping a young woman. This incident has sparked widespread outrage in the East African nation.
The security forces have not yet confirmed allegations that the suspects are soldiers. Police officials have stated that the investigation is ‘progressing well’ but did not confirm whether any arrests have been made, according to a BBC report.
Authorities have also refuted claims circulating online that the young woman had died following the attack, labelling these assertions as ‘falsehoods.’ In a statement posted on social media platform X, police assured the public that ‘this young lady is very safe.’
Additionally, the police have warned against sharing the video online to prevent further trauma to the victim and her family.
The video, which started circulating on Sunday, has shocked many in Tanzania, a country known for its conservative values. Tanzania has been grappling with a rise in gender-based violence, with many cases reportedly going unreported, according to local media.
The victim is reportedly a resident of Yombo Dovya, a suburb in Dar es Salaam, although the exact date of the video recording remains unclear.
As investigations continue, police have urged the public to remain calm and patient, promising to release detailed information once legal procedures are complete.
Human rights organisations and social media users are calling for swift and decisive action from the authorities. The Legal and Human Rights Centre cautioned that ignoring such issues could lead to their escalation in society. Meanwhile, lawyers from the Tanganyika Law Society condemned the incident as a ‘gross violation of both the country’s laws and societal norms.’
Home Affairs Minister Hamad Masauni indicated that the suspects were ‘already’ under arrest, but did not provide further details.
