Universal Health Coverage: Borno govt, WHO partner to expand Monguno General Hospital

The Borno State Government under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum and the World Health Organisation, WHO are collaborating with each other to expand Monguno General Hospital so as to ensure Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Monguno local government area in North Borno Senatorial District has faced series Boko Haram devastation, until it was liberated by troops and now hosting millions of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs from Guzamala, Kukawa, Marte and other affected local government areas along the fringes of Lake Chad that are in dire need of health care services.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the facility in Monguno, the Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Mallam Gana commended governor Zulum for giving the desired attention to the health sector, which has provided better healthcare services to the people across the state.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revamping the health sector, stating that “it remains one of the six states of the federation that gave top priorities to health. This is in addition to approval of 15% of the state’s annual budget allocated to health sector”.

Professor also acknowledged the continued support received from th World Health Organization to the health which has contributed in the overall well being of Borno residents.

Continuing he said: “The Borno State Government has synergized with the World Health Organization, WHO to expand Monguno General Hospital with the goal of not just reducing health challenges in the region, but eradicating them entirely”.

On his part, Dr. Walter Kazadi Molumbo, WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, said: “WHO as a strong partner is working diligently to mobilize additional resources to complete the hospital expansion before the end of my mission in Nigeria.

“Monguno General Hospital would be fully operational and equipped with modern facilities to deliver high quality healthcare, as we pledged our continued support to both Borno State and Nigeria”.
