THE World Bank announced on Friday a significant commitment of $100 million to accelerate Zambia’s digital infrastructure and expand internet access. This investment will be channelled through the Digital Zambia Acceleration Project, funded by the International Development Association.
Zhang Wencai, Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Administrative Officer, made the pledge during a meeting with Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati. Zhang emphasised that the project aligns with the Zambian government’s priorities and aims to broaden broadband infrastructure and services, alongside deploying digital public infrastructure to boost efficiency in both public and private sectors.
‘The Digital Zambia Acceleration Project will play a crucial role in supporting digitisation in selected high-impact sectors and promoting employable digital skills,’ said Zhang. He also mentioned the establishment of a project implementation unit within SMART Zambia Institute, a state institution, to lead government digitisation initiatives.
Minister Mutati expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s support, highlighting the project’s potential to significantly advance the country’s digitization efforts. ‘This initiative will greatly promote digitisation in Zambia, enhancing connectivity and digital skills among our people,’ he stated.
The World Bank’s investment is poised to enhance Zambia’s digital landscape, fostering economic growth and development by expanding access to modern digital services and infrastructure.
