The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has unveiled hotel and apartment blocks at its Writers’ Village as part of activities marking its 45th Annual International Convention.
The buildings were named in honour of distinguished Nigerian literary figures and individuals who contributed to the development of the Writers’ Village.
Block A, named after Imam Abubakar Gimba, was unveiled by Mrs. Bekearedebo Warrens, Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who represented the SGF, Sen. George Akume.
Block B, the Olu Obafemi Hotel and Apartments, was unveiled by Mallam Denja Abdullahi, 11th President of ANA, in honour of Prof. Olu Obafemi.
Block C was unveiled by Dr John Asein, Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in honour of Kolawole Kayode Shaw, popularly known as KK Shaw, the developer of the Writers’ Village.
Warrens commended the ANA leadership and the federal government for their contributions to the association and support towards the completion of the buildings.
Speaking at the unveiling of the building named in his honour, Prof. Obafemi expressed gratitude to God, describing the development as a blessing that had come at the right time.
He recalled that the struggle to recover the Writers’ Village for the association took place during his tenure, expressing delight that the vision was gradually becoming a reality.
“I am very grateful to God. I know this Writers’ Village will become a reality.
“The struggle to get this village back to the association, including its recovery, took place during my time. I feel very honoured that this has become a reality.
“To my understanding, this is the biggest Writers’ Village in Africa,” he said.
Also speaking, Shaw expressed gratitude to God and appreciation to the association for recognising his contribution.
“I just want to appreciate God. I want to thank you for remembering me. I want to appreciate the faithfulness of God,” he said.
The ceremony was held under the leadership of ANA President Dr. Usman Akanbi.
The buildings were developed by Kolie Mobs Ventures Ltd.
The development marks another milestone in ANA’s efforts to establish the Writers’ Village as a centre for literary activities and accommodation for members of the writing community.
