Nigeria faced another widespread power outage on Wednesday following the collapse of the national grid, underscoring ongoing issues with the country’s electricity infrastructure.
This latest failure comes just months after several similar incidents were reported in October, despite government assurances of a permanent fix.
According to a statement issued by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at 2:06pm, a “system disturbance” on the national grid led to outages across its franchise areas.
The notice reads, “We wish to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 1:32 pm today causing power outage across our franchise areas.
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, be assured that we are coordinating closely with relevant stakeholders to restore power fully as soon as the grid is stabilized.”
A separate post on the official account of Nigeria’s national grid on X (formerly Twitter) revealed that the collapse took place at around 1:32 pm.
The brief post confirmed the disruption and noted, “The major grid setback has occurred and the restoration is to commence.”
This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of grid collapses in the country.
Earlier in October, the grid went down multiple times, sparking frustration among citizens and businesses.
The Federal Government had pledged to address these recurring failures, yet power supply issues remain unresolved.
