Foundation, NCoS offers free medical outreach to 500 Kano inmates

The Feture Bright Stars Orphans and Less Privileged Charity Foundation, in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano Command, has conducted a comprehensive medical outreach for 500 Kano inmates.

The foundation also donated drugs and medical consumables to support healthcare delivery at the Kurmawa Custodial centre in Kano.

The Chairperson of the foundation, Mrs Bilkisu Lawal-Ismail, disclosed this in a statement issued by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan, on Monday in Kano.

Lawal-Ismail said the outreach focused on inmates requiring specialist dental, orthopaedic and physiotherapy services.

She said the medical team, comprising dentists, orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists, conducted assessments, treatments and specialist consultations for the inmates.

“The medical team was led by Dr Jamilu Sani Kwakwatawa, alongside Dr Abubakar Abdullahi Tudun Yola and Dr Muntaka Abdulrahman Rijiyar Lemon.” She said.

Lawal-Ismail emphasised that the health and welfare of inmates, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, should remain a priority.

She said out of the 500 inmates, 150 inmates received minor surgical procedures, while 250 underwent dental scaling and polishing.

“The foundation also provided dental restoration for 70 inmates with cavities,  50 inmates were examined and treated for mouth ulcers and 30 inmates were assessed and treated for physiotherapy-related conditions.” she said.

According to her, limited access to specialist medical services, particularly dental and orthopaedic care, made interventions of  such as nature essential.

The chairperson said the foundation will continue to collaborate with the NCoS to improve the health and welfare of inmates across the state.

She, however, said  the doctors expressed concerns for the health and wellbeing of inmates and advocated for such continuous outreach.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the foundation for its continued partnership and support to the service.

Yusuf-Lakpene, represented by the Officer-in-Charge of Kurmawa Custodial Centre, DCC Ibrahim Isah-Rambo, appreciated the foundation and the medical professionals for their humanitarian service and commitment to improving healthcare and welfare among inmates

He described the foundation as a principal partner in efforts to improve inmates’ welfare and called on individuals, organisations and other well-meaning members of the public to emulate the gesture.

He said such support would contribute to the rehabilitation and wellbeing of inmates.
