Illegal mining, energy transition tops agenda as National Council on Mining holds in Ilorin

 

Stakeholders in the Minerals and Metals sector gather in Ilorin, Kwara State capital to address key thematic areas, the key issues that would be on their minds are issue of illegal mining operations and the prospects inherent in energy transition minerals, amongst several others.

A statement by Deputy Director (Information&PR), Alaba R. Balogun, said the meeting is scheduled to hold 15-17 January 2024, will also seek to enhance the repositioning of the sector for rapid socio-economic growth and development of the country.

With the theme ”Minerals and Metals Sector: A Panacea for Economic Growth and Diversity”, stakeholders will also seek to look at the prospects and problems of community development and inclusiveness in the country’s minerals and metals sector;  technological innovation as a pivotal game changer for minerals and metals industry minerals resources management as well as how to actualize Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.

The Minister for Solid Minerals Development Dr Oladele Alake, is expected to deliver a keynote address. Also expected are Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries in charge of mineral resources at the states and other relevant stakeholders sector.

Participants at the meeting will also include Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), Women In Mining (WIM), Minerals Resources and Environmental Committee (NIREMCO) and other operators.

Dr Alake at various fora had said that minerals sector is the next Petroleum of Nigeria especially with the global transition from fossil fuel to green energy coupled with the determination of President Bola Tinubu to diversify the economy and uplift millions of Nigerians out of poverty level.
