Former Minister of Industries, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, has commended the move by 60 members of the House of Representatives to have a return to parliamentary system of government.
In a post on his verified official X handle (Twitter), Aganga said that it was an important development that should be supported by all Nigerians.
According to Aganga, who served as a minister under President Goodluck Jonathan, it is obvious that the present presidential system of government is not working.
“I encourage Nigerians to get invoked in the debate and see it through. We may decide to run the parliamentary system with adaptations or come up with our own hybrid of the presidential/parliamentary system that brings out the best in both together in a unique Nigerian way.
“What is certain is that the current system is not working and we can not afford to wait for another 7 years! Any evolving system must be adapted to address the issues we have with the current system learning from the experiences of the Swiss, UK and many other well governed nations that have done the same,” Aganga said.
He explained that rather than see the call by the HoR members,as misplaced, Nigeria should think of the attendant advantages that a parliamentary system would being.
“What matters is that it delivers good governance, it is not expensive to run and that the energies of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora come together for the much awaited transformation of our country.
As I explained in “Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa”, this is the first important step to transform Nigeria and reclaim the Jewel,” he added.
